Requirements Checklist

Driver's Ed

Earliest Enrollment Age: 14.5

You can start driver's education before you're old enough for your permit.

30 Hours of Instruction Required

Complete 30 hours from an accredited source (in-person, online, or hybrid), and pass the course.

Knowledge Test (Ages 15-17)

Take the official DMV test online through KnowTo Drive with a webcam. A parent/guardian must supervise.

Get Your Permit

Minimum Age: 15 Years Old

You must be at least 15 to apply for your Instruction Permit in person at a DMV.

First Professional Lesson

Begin your Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) training lessons with an instructor. Your first lesson must happen within 60 days of getting your permit.

Practice Driving

Permit Age: 15 Years Old

You can begin supervised practice driving once you have your instruction permit.

Lesson Spacing Requirement

There must be at least 19 days between your first and last professional driving lessons.

50 Hours of Supervised Practice

Master the road with 50 hours of supervised practice, including 10 hours after dark.

Road Test

Schedule & Pass Your Road Test

When you're ready, schedule and pass your behind-the-wheel road test to get your probationary license. You'll demonstrate your driving skills and knowledge to a DMV examiner.

Pro Tip: Practice consistently in the weeks leading up to your test. Focus on mirror checks, smooth turns, complete stops, and parallel parking.
