The Short Answer

Wisconsin teen drivers must complete a minimum of 50 hours of supervised practice driving before they can take their road test and apply for a probationary license. Of those 50 hours, at least 10 must be completed after dark.

This is in addition to the 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training required through your driver's education program. Those 6 hours do not count toward your 50-hour total.

Important Clarification

The 50 hours of practice driving are separate from the 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction you complete with a driving school. Your driver's ed hours and your supervised practice hours are tracked independently.

Who Can Supervise Your Practice Driving?

During your 50 hours of supervised practice, the supervising adult in the vehicle must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Be at least 25 years old
  • Hold a valid Wisconsin driver's license (or a license from another state)
  • Be seated in the front passenger seat
  • Be awake and able to take control of the vehicle if needed

Parents, stepparents, legal guardians, and other qualified adults can all serve as supervisors. The supervisor does not need to be a licensed driving instructor.

How to Log Your Practice Hours

Wisconsin requires you to track your supervised driving hours using the state's official driving log. Your parent or guardian must sign off on the completed hours before you apply for your probationary license.

You can download the official Wisconsin Supervised Driving Log (Form HS303) directly from the Wisconsin DOT website, or pick one up at any DMV service center.

Don't Lose Your Log

Keep your completed driving log in a safe place. You'll need to present it when you apply for your probationary license. A lost or incomplete log can delay your road test.

Does the 10 Hours of Night Driving Have to Be Consecutive?

No. Your 10 hours of nighttime practice can be spread across multiple sessions. There is no minimum duration per session, though longer sessions give your teen more meaningful experience in low-visibility conditions.

Wisconsin defines nighttime driving as driving after sunset. Check local sunrise and sunset times seasonally, as nighttime arrives much earlier in November than in June.

Tips for Making the Most of Your 50 Hours

Vary Your Driving Environments

Don't spend all 50 hours in your neighborhood. Mix in highway driving, rural roads, city traffic, and parking lots. Wisconsin's licensing exam tests a range of skills, and real-world variety prepares teens far better than repetitive routes.

Practice in All Weather Conditions

Wisconsin winters are a reality for every driver. Use your practice period to give your teen experience driving in rain, snow, and ice under calm, supervised conditions, before they encounter those situations alone.

Log Hours Consistently

Don't wait until the last few weeks before the road test to cram in hours. Spreading practice across the full 6-month permit period builds genuine skill and confidence rather than just checking a box.

Use the Progress Tracker

Road Ready Resources offers a free interactive Teen Progress Tracker to help you stay organized and monitor milestones throughout the licensing process.

What Happens If You Don't Complete All 50 Hours?

You cannot apply for a Wisconsin probationary license without completing and documenting all 50 hours of supervised practice. The DMV requires your signed driving log as part of the application. There is no waiver or exception to this requirement for teen drivers under 18.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can hours logged in another state count toward the Wisconsin 50-hour requirement?

Wisconsin does not explicitly prohibit out-of-state hours from counting toward your total, but all hours must be documented on the Wisconsin supervised driving log and signed by a qualifying adult supervisor. Check with your local DMV if you have specific questions about out-of-state driving time.

Do driving school behind-the-wheel hours count toward my 50 hours?

No. The 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction completed with a licensed driving school are separate and do not count toward your 50-hour supervised practice requirement.

Is there a minimum number of hours per session?

No. Wisconsin does not set a minimum session length. However, shorter sessions of 15 to 20 minutes give teens less time to settle in and build confidence behind the wheel. Most driving experts recommend sessions of at least 30 to 45 minutes.

My teen is almost 18. Do they still need 50 hours?

Yes, if your teen is under 18 when they apply for a probationary license, the 50-hour requirement applies regardless of how close they are to their 18th birthday. Once a driver turns 18, they are subject to the adult licensing process, which has no minimum practice hour requirement.
